Summary:A former hero, turned traitor, was put on trial for his life on August 14 1945. Marshal Philippe Petain, the soldier all France had known as the defender of Verdun during World War I, was accused of treason during World War II. In 1940, he became head of the Vichy government which controlled the part of France not occupied by Hitler's armies. Petain was imprisoned for his crimes and died in 1951, aged 95.
