- Story Text: Song-writers for legendary diva Cher swept the boards at London's annual Ivor Novello Award ceremony on Thursday (May 27), winning three of the prestigious Ivors.Sexy popstar Robbie Williams has also added another two trophies to his already huge collection, sharing awards, for songwriter of the year and most performed work, with his writing partner Guy Chambers.
The stars were all out at the luxurious London Grosvenor House Hotel on Thursday (May 27) for the 44th celebrated Ivor Novello awards.Pop celebrities such as Cerys Matthews from Catatonia, the Corrs, B*Witched and Jarvis Cocker, were all competing for top awards.
The awards known as the Ivors are the British music industry's foremost songwriting accolade and previous winners include the Beatles, Noel Coward and Elton John.
But many journalists seemed more interested in finding out why Cerys and the rest of Catatonia didn't play at the opening of the new Welsh assembly on Wednesday, rather than asking about her nomination.
Hosted by Paul Gambiccini, there were also several guest hosts including Kylie Minogue, Lionel Richie and Bob Geldof.
Every year something controversial happens at this ceremony and this year was no exception.
Chrissie Hynde won the award for Most Contribution to British Music, but immediately handed it back her after her acceptance speech.Band members from Jamiraqui went up in three separate groups, following a huge falling out after the departure of bass player Stuart Zender, who left to spend more time with his girlfriend, Melanie Blatt of All Saints. And Robbie Williams took the opportunity to put skeptics in their place.
This year Rod Stewart won a Lifetime Achievement Ivor, while Cher's song 'Believe' won three awards for an unbelievable number of song writers: Brian Higgins, Stuart McLennan, Paul Barry, Steve Torch, Matt Gray and Tim Powell.
The song picked up International Hit of the Year, Best Selling UK Single and Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
Robbie Williams got the top award of the day, along with his co-writer Guy Chambers - Songwriters of the Year.He also won for Most Performed Work for the single 'Angels'.
Robbie was genuinely overwhelmed, his voice breaking during his acceptance speech, where he took a moment to have a dig at the many skeptics in the music industry who thought he would never be able to shake off his boy band image. But he has proved them all wrong - with two hugely successful albums, top ten hits aplenty and hoards of adoring fans. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
