- Story Text: MTV hosted its annual movie awards on Saturday night (June 5) from an airport hanger in Santa Monica.Hugh Grant, Robbie Williams, Mike Myers and Latino heart throb Ricky Martin joined other Hollywood stars for the years' most radical event.
The Californian sun was out for the 1999 MTV Movie Awards and so were the stars.Action hero, Jackie Chan and newcomer Katie Holmes rubbed shoulders on the red carpet.
British pop singer Robbie Williams, one of the nights' performers was also soaking up the sun in relative anonymity compared to the UK.
The MTV awards are considered representative of the radical side of the movie business. The stars come to this show "because it's more fun than the oscars, more rock and roll" with "zany categories, like best kiss, best fight and best villain".Some even "watched MTV because it helped them to improve their English".
Robbie Williams has had no trouble settling into California. As far as he's concerned "being young, travelling the world and having the job he has makes being Robbie Williams very good indeed".
Naturally, the trendiest awards show attracted the trendiest hairstyles and fashions, for men and women, all shapes, all sizes and all ages.
While Jada Pinkett was cruising the red carpet outside, inside, her husband, Will Smith was preparing for his entrance on horseback to perform "Wild Wild West".
Amongst the winners on the night were Adam Sandler, for Best Comedic Performance in "The Waterboy", Ben Stiller for Best Fight (with Puffy the dog) in "There's Something About Mary" and Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker for Best Onscreen Duo in "Rush Hour".
Cameron Diaz accepted her Best Female Performance via a video message for "There's Something About Mary", and was more than a little relieved that hers was in a regular category.
Jim Carrey was a little taken aback that he'd won Best Male Performance for "The Truman Show", but that was nothing compared to the crowds' reaction to his hippie disguise, not to mention his acceptance speech.Nevertheless, the standing ovation for the actor made it clear he'd touched a raw nerve.
Best Movie was scooped by "There's Something About Mary", and after a little canoodling on stage, Catherine Zeta Jones and Ricky Martin announced that Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes had won the award for Best Kiss in "Shakespeare in Love".
