- Story Text: Some of Hollywood's heavy-hitters turned out on Saturday night, June 12 at a private party hosted by fashion king Giorgio Armani for his long-time friend Eric Clapton in celebration of Clapton's upcoming Christie's benefit auction of his historic collection of guitars.
On June 24, Christie's auction house in New York City will auction off 100 of Clapton's historic guitars, including "Brownie," the 1956 sunburst Fender Stratocaster on which he first played his classic song "Layla."
Clapton hopes to raise close to one million US dollars in the auction, all of which will go to the Crossroads Centre, a drug and alcohol dependency treatment centre Clapton helped to found in the Caribbean island nation of Antigua in 1998.
His interest in drug treatment came from his own well-publicised battle with alcohol and drugs, from which he says he is still recovering. He picked Antigua for his Centre because he has a home there and he was upset by the soaring addiction rate throughout the Caribbean.
The 36 bed centre uses customers' fees to subsidise treatment for those who can't afford it and admittance is not limited to island residents.
Italian fashion magnate Giorgio Armani hosted Saturday night's party, which brought out such celebrities as Jeff Goldblum, Glenn Close and David Hasselhoff. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
