- Story Text: MTV chose to host its first musical extravaganza on the Balearic island of Ibiza using the dramatic backdrop of a quarry as the setting.
Attended by thousands of die-hard clubbers, the unique, all-night event celebrated all aspects of dance culture on Tuesday (August 24) with the dance world's favourite DJs and live acts.
The island of Ibiza first attracted artists, musicians and actors alike, in the 1960's but it wasn't until the late 1980's - early 1990's, that it became the club Mecca of the world.
Every year, thousands of clubbers from across Europe and beyond flock to this small land off the south east coast of Spain, to line the beaches. They soak up the sun by day and party, rock, groove and get down right funky in their favourite clubs by night.
During the last five years Ibiza has been invaded by the dance scene from clubs in New York, London and the continent in June, July and August with big music promoters hiring well known clubs like Pacha, Amnesia and Privilege for their resident DJs.MTV however, had not until this week organised an event on the island.
Instead of opting for one of the big clubs to host MTV Ibiza '99, MTV spent weeks trying to locate the perfect open air venue.Sa Pedrera (The Rock) is situated a mile north of San Antonio on the west of the island and once transformed by the lights proved to be a spectacular setting for the event.
The line up of acts for the evening was equally impressive.DJs Frankie Knuckles, Paul Oakenfold, David Morales, Erick Morillo, Seb Fontaine, Norman Jay, Daniele Davoli, Bob Sinclar and Rocca who performed on different stages, EARTH, WATER, PLASMA, FIRE, and the largest of them all AIR.Live acts included Faithless, Orbital, the Jungle Brothers and Chicane.
Resident DJ at Cream in Liverpool summed up how 'top drawer' the representation of artists and DJs was.
"I'm looking forward to seeing a few of the other DJs playing, Knuckles and Morales especially, - Norman Jay, Daniel Davoli, Orbital I can't wait to see yeah I mean you'll probably still find me here at 7 o'clock this morning, I'm looking forward to it.I think it's gonna be a good event all round. The most important thing is a wide spectrum of music for the people who are paying their money to come and see it and that's the most important thing, in my opinion anyway," he said.
Organisers estimated that ten thousand people attended the event from all over the island.Billed as the biggest night of the summer, it wasn't surprising that many dance fans turned up when the gates opened at 7.00pm on Tuesday evening and partied through the night until the very end - 6.00am the next day.
DJs and bands alike were impressed with the calibre of fellow artists performing as well as the breadth of musical tastes catered for at the party in the quarry.Under a clear, starry sky, revellers were also treated to sidebar entertainment from bizarrely dressed characters and musicians.
As hosts of the event, MTV admitted putting the 'show on the road' had been difficult but that the end result was well worth the effort and they said, they hoped to be staging the event every year from now on.
For those who weren't able to make it to Ibiza for the party, MTV are due to televise the event in September in two parts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
