I mean, I've been asking for an assistant for a long time now because, you know, I think it's important that you don't just, you know, poor Q's dead, you know and then suddenly a new person appears. I think if you can have it coming in that when he does die, he's been training his assistant to carry on, that's a great thing. (SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) PIERCE BROSNAN SAYING The big question I've been asked in the next few months, will I do a fourth? The answer is yes, I'm contracted for a fourth, theoretically, so, I would love to do a fourth. This one was a joy to do, for many reasons, one being, Michael Apted. Michael Apted is such a fine director and all the discussions we had about character, character, character. I'm mean, in one place in Scandanavia, they had the army out, they had a helicopter and they had police outriders. You know, closed all the streets. Oh, I'm used to it, yes, I mean, this is nothing compared to it. DIRECTOR MICHAEL APTED POSING FANS TAKING PHOTOS PIERCE BROSNAN ARRIVING TV CAMERAS (SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) MICHAEL APTED SAYING You're right. It was a kind of odd idea me doing the film and when they asked to talk to me about it, I thought why would they want me to do it? I've never done a big action film, but, I think they wanted to do something slightly different. Look after the action, keep the action, I think they just wanted to kind of get more interesting characters, more interesting story and, you know, Pierce wanted to develop the role. I think he wanted to work with a director who would be listening to that and wouldn't just be dealing with the action. PIERCE BROSNAN AND FIANCE KEELEY SHAYE SMITH SPEAKING WITH THE MEDIA CRAZY FAN WITH "I LOVE PIERCE BROSNAN" HAT BROSNAN WAVES TO THE CRAZY FAN (SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) PIERCE BROSNAN TELLING HIS FAVORITE SCENE IN THE FILM, Uh, the torture sequence, Sophie Marceau, Elektra, Bond. KEELEY SHAYE SMITH SAYING This is your fond memory? PIERCE BROSNAN SAYING, Well, I think it's a good sequence, though. I think it's a really kind of kinky, perverse Bond-esque sequence, you know? I didn't tell you about that, come over here, darling and let me see. You'll see the movie and." WIDE SHOT OF MEDIA LINED UP JOHN CLEESE ARRIVING LAURENCE FISHBURE AND DENISE RICHARDS ARRIVING JOE PESCI ARRIVING (SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) DENISE RICHARDS SAYING you know what, I am so happy my name is Christmas. - Story Text: On the eve of a new millenium, one of film history's most enduring characters celebrated his 19th big screen outing in Los Angeles when Pierce Brosnan attended the World Premiere of the newest James Bond thriller "The World is Not Enough."
Although this is the 19th film in the highly popular and profitable James Bond film series, it's only the thirdouting for Pierce Brosnan who took over in 1995 with "GoldenEye."
This was followed by "Tomorrow Never Dies" in 1997 and now, with "The World is Not Enough."
Only the second film in the series not based on any writings of Bond's creator Ian Fleming, this thriller takes agent 007 from Spain to the oil fields of Azerbaijan to theexotic city of Istanbul, Turkey as he chases his latest arch-villain, the murderous terrorist Renard, played by "The Full Monty" star Robert Carlyle.
Perhaps one of Bond's more formidable foes, Renard is a man with a bullet lodged in his brain which makes him totally impervious to physical pain. His diabolical plan involves nuclear weapons, a stolen Russian submarine and a plot to monopolize the oil flow out of central Asia.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Bond film without beautiful, mysterious and exotic women and this installment features two such ladies.French actress and "Braveheart" co-star Sophie Marceau plays Elektra King, the daughter of a murdered oil tycoon whom Bond is sent to protect. The second tempation for007 is Dr.Christmas Jones, a nuclear scientist with a wardrobe of busty tank tops and tight cut-off shorts played by Denise Richards of "Starship Troopers" fame.
Returning from the past two films is Oscar and Tony winning actress Judi Dench as M, Bond's superior who gets more involved in this plot than any other in the series. In the course of the film, she gets kidnapped, imprisoned and even gets a chance to utilize some gadgetry skills of her own.
Making his 17th appearance in the Bond series as Q, the inventor of MI6's arsenal of deadly gadgets is Desmond Llewelyn. But in this installment, he finally gets an assistant, played with understated humor by Monty Python legend John Cleese. In fact, the script hints that Cleese's character, who may or may not be named "R," will eventually take over for Q when he retires.
As always, Q supplies Bond with a truckload of new gadgets, including a pair of x-ray vision sunglasses, a hydro boat that operates in three inches of water, a watch with dual lasers and miniature grappling hook, an airbag concealed in a ski jacket, and, most importantly, a new BMW Z8 with missiles in the headlamps, remote control and Titanium plating and armour.
Another trademark of the Bond series, the action sequence, is also well-represented.The film starts with a high speed boat chase on the river Thames culminating in a high altitude battle aboard a hot air balloon, moves on to a tension filled ski chase involving bat-like flying parahawks, and climaxes with a to-the-death battle inside the nuclear reactor of a Russian submarine.
In the director's chair for this episode is veteran British filmmaker Michael Apted, who previously directed Sissy Spacek to an Oscar in "Coal Miner's Daughter," Signourney Weaver to an Oscar nomination in "Gorillas in the Mist," and Jodie Foster to a similar honor in "Nell." His producers include long-time Bond collaborator Michael G.Wilson and Bond icon Albert Broccoli's daughter Barbara Broccoli.
Another important element of any Bond film is the opening title song.In this case, the title song is performed by the recently Grammy nominated rock group Garbage with lead singer Shirley Manson handling vocals.
