- Story Text: Contemporary dance musician Fatboy Slim has played Istanbul to help raise funds for victims of the recent Turkish earthquake. The income will be donated to the Turkish Human Resource Development Foundation for the construction of a rehabilitation centre for physically and psychologically damaged earthquake victims.
Contemparary dance musicians have joined forces in Turkey to raise money for the quake victims' foundation.
UK's Fatboy Slim starred alongside Darren Emmerson, Ministry of Sound's Resident DJ Jazzy M, Diesel and Bent, as all contributed to the event waiving their appearance fees.
Flying straight to Turkey from an America concert, the tired dance music master Norman Cook said, "If Baron and Sting and Pavarotti came and do the show, it would have been a great thing. But basically what we do is playing records and people dance, this kind of works for us.Nothing more greater than that."
DJ's took stage in the tent called 'Big Beat Boutique' within the Bostanci Concert Hall, one of the biggest private cultural grounds in Istanbul's Asian side.
British music agent David Levy, father of the idea, first came to Turkey for the Massive Attack concert in July.Although plans were to come back in September, the disasterous earthquake shook western Turkey, killed more than 20,000 and left much more homeless.
"We started to talk about how we can help," Levy says.
"Because we just felt connected to it, and we have been there, so we decided by October we should try to do relation between British dancing and Turkish dancing since it's growing here and that's important to us."
The Human Resource Developement Foundation in Turkey is working on a project to construct a rehabilitation centre for young and adults in western earthquake hit town, Golcuk. The regional municipality has assigned the land for the project.
The complete construction has an estimated budget of 1,5 million dollars.
The tickets of the Quake Aid concert was sold at a fix price of 30 USD.Levy says, "We just trying to help them begin the process of raising money for that foundation in a kind of hospital to help people. It's going to be one of the many events but the idea is that we are here and people are helping themselves. We are not trying to take over or tell anybody anything, it's the way they raise money."
Futher Quake Aid events are planned with a larger contribution of world musicians "They have another event in April and we are going to do another in England hopefully in July at the English love parade, same day as the Berlin love parade, "Levy says.
"We already have other DJ's who are famous, who said they would do that one and we just want to try to encourage other people in dance music to sometimes use their success to help other dancings if they want to, you know.We are a new industry, we got a lot of success very quickly and now we learn what to do with that success," Levy says.
Future concerts and bank accounts for donations will be announced by the British youth magazine, Dazed and Confused, Ministry of Sound Club's magazine and web site, BBC radio programs, Radio Tel Aviv from Israel, as well as Number One TV, Energy FM and NTV in Turkey. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
