- Story Text: Walt Disney's world famous characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse met with fans in Yangon, Myanmar, on Saturday (September 27).
Disney's signature cartoon characters appear for the first time in the Southeast Asian nation, after the opening up of country after decades of military rule.
To some of their fans, Walt Disney's cartoons mean so much more than just entertainment for children.
"Mickey Mouse cartoon movies are very good and I love them since my childhood. This is very great for children for Disney to produce educational cartoon movies later," said 24-year old Disney fan, May Thiri.
Project Manager of Thailand's BEC-TERO Entertainment, Raywadee Lavichant, the representative of Walt Disney Company said Myanmar is ready for something new.
"Myanmar is now more open. So we can bring new things here," she said.
Disney is scheduled to hold performances in the capital Yangon for the first time on October 8.
"We are here today to promote the show as we bring this show first time to Myanmar. We would like people to meet with our characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse here," Laywadee added.
Myanmar is recognised by the international community for its reform effort after the civilian government of President Thein Sein took office in 2011.
Walt Disney's move into Myanmar is thought to be another indication of positive change in the country following its political transition since 2011 from military rule.
