- Story Text: Cuba's NG La Banda - the NG stands for New Generation - are the quintessential Cuban timba group - an emsemble of tremedous power and precision. But they also pioneers of the new experimental sound of Cuba - a fusion between flamenco - and salsa. Reuters caught up with them in Havana.
They stand for a new generation of Cuban music, but NG La Banda have been around for quite a while.
The recent explosion of Cuban music has put the island once again at the centre of salsa fans and after The Buena Vista Social Club, more and more Cuban bands have reemerged into the spotlight.
NG La Banda formed in 1988 in what was originally meant to be a temorary five-year project. But they lasted until now and are going strong in Cuba as well as outside of it.
Jose Luis Cortes who founded the band says
"I think the most important thing about music is that it's dancable - if people can't dance to music it doesn't reach them. This fusion is the spirit of it."
"I think what happened in Cuba is a little rare, because effectively when one starts a a musician you know everything that has happened in Cuba, musically and dancewise. .. I think there's a lot we're doing right now. Our music is freer, more experimental, more of what's needed in the music industry."
