- Story Text: A tiny independent cinema in the heart of London's west end is giving everyone the chance to sing their way through the all-time favourite, The Sound of Music. The event is attracting extraordinary numbers of people dressed as nuns...
von Trapp children...barronesses...even goats, who are determined to help Julie Andrews keep the hills alive.
It's one of the greatest films of all time, and the Prince Charles Cinema in London have decided to give every die-hard Sound of Music fan the chance they've all been waiting for - to sing along with Julie Andrews at each mountain she climbs.
It's a brilliant idea, and it's taking over London's Cinemaland. Not interested in the latest blockbuster release, people from every walk of life are flocking to this tiny picture-house - clad in nun's attire - determined to live out their dream of being a part of this extraordinarily popular film.
Little girls, bearded men and city-types make sure they're at the venue early, giving them time to buy their edelweisse and get the best seats.
Tonight's show is hosted by British comedienne Jackie Clune. She says the film's popularity is rooted in its universal appeal: "It's just a family show for all types of family - the pretended family, the heterosexual nuclear family and the family of the hip swinging London scene and I think what's so great about it is it works on lots of different levels. It's actually very moving as well - Edelweisse, I cry every time - the first song The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Music, again is a real heart-churning moment."
Indeed it is.The atmosphere when Julie Andrews comes flying up the mountains is indescribable. The audience - who've been instructed before the film to join Maria in her actions - belt the song out with such passion, it's clear they've been dying to do it for some time.
And it's this that is the key to the success of the event. The people at the Prince Charles Cinema realised it was time to give a break to all those dying to burst out in song, but forbidden to do so.
Being told to take part in the film's every step and become every character is a genius idea and has given yet another lease of life to this wonderful family favourite. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
