- Story Text: Indian media report that Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and his wife have used a gender test to determine the sex of their unborn child, which is illegal in India.
Health officials in India were looking into reports on Monday (June 17) in the country's press which claim Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and his wife have used a gender determination test to find out the sex of their unborn child -- a practice illegal in India.
The health ministry has confirmed to media outlets that it is investigating the matter, following an email from the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) calling for the inquiry.
Media reports say 47-year-old Khan and his wife Gauri are set to become parents to a baby boy next month, using a surrogate mother, but had used a gender test to determine the sex of the unborn child.
The couple, who already have two children, a girl and a boy, have so far yet to respond to the claims.
Gender determination tests are illegal in India as part of a policy intent on reducing the abortion rate of female foetuses, owing to a cultural preference for boys.
Khan is India's highest paid celebrity, according to Forbes India magazine's celebrity 100 list, with estimated earnings of 2 billion rupees ($34 million) between October 2011 and September 2012.
The actor has courted controversy in the past, reportedly being banned from a cricket stadium in Mumbai after allegedly becoming involved with an altercation with security guards. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
