Thai protesters cheered and hugged each other as they packed up to leave Bangkok's Don Muang domestic airport on Wednesday (December 3), ending their protest a day after Thailand's top court disbanded the country's ruling party and its two allies.
The protesters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) had occupied the domestic airport since last Thursday (November 27) two days after taking over the $4 billion U.S. dollar Suvarnabhumi international airport in their "final battle" to topple Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat's government.
They accuse Somchai of being a front for his brother-in-law and former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by the military in 2006.
Thaksin allies still dominate parliament and are expected to elect a new prime minister from among their number on Dec. 8 -- the third prime minister in as many months.
But anti-government protesters were jubilant as they removed tyre barricades and helped each other with luggage for the trip home. There were tears of joys and hugs as the walked out of the domestic airport with some waving pictures of the revered Thai monarch.
A few flashed the victory sign with their fingers and showed injuries sustained during the protest. Some left in cars while others waited for buses to take them home. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
