- Story Text: Ultra Orthodox Jews held a protest on Tuesday (December 6) against television programming in Israel.
Demonstrators gathered outside the Jerusalem offices of the national broadcaster, Israel Broadcasting Association, smashing hundreds of televisions in protest at what the religious community says are the 'immoral' programmes being shown in the country.
"We feel that an era has ended, it is the end of the television era. Not withstanding progress all over the world, the point of this is the preparation for the arrival of the Messiah - We are moving forward and cleansing the people, cleaning everything in order to prepare for the Messiah, for the purity of the people," said Aron Getz while attending the protest.
The televisions were picked up from religious families who decided to become more pious.
The demonstration showed mounting tension between a politically influential religious minority and Israel's secular Jewish majority population who spar on a regular basis over the degree to which public policy should abide by religious ritual. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
