The 2,300 year old mummy of a female child was put on display at Mexico's Anthropological Museum in Mexico City on Thursday (January 13).
"It is one of the oldest ever discovered in Mexico.
2,300 years old. Many of the mummies found in Mexico are approximately 700 years old," said Dr, Edgar Gayan and investigator for the University of Mexico's Institute for Anthropological Studies.
The mummy, which archeologists affectionately refer to as "Pepita," was found with bits of green and orange cloth and patches of hair. Archeologists discovered white stork feathers and two pigtails alongside the remains.
Experts believe that the fact that she was ceremoniously buried with these artifacts points to the distinct possibility that she was considered important to her community.
The remains were discovered in an area known as Sierra Gorda, in Queretaro, in a cave approximately 9,750 feet above sea level.
Considered to be one of the oldest mummies ever found in Mexico, scientists say the mummification was caused by natural causes - extremely dry conditions and cold weather in the region. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
