- Story Text: Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie has applied to adopt a Vietnamese child and the papers were being processed, Vietnamese adoption officials said.
Officials said Jolie had made an application through an American adoption agency to adopt a boy aged between 3 and 4 years old. The child now lives in Tam Binh orphanage in the southern city of Ho Chih Minh.
The adoption could take about four months to process, but since Jolie has already identified the child it could be quicker.
Jolie and Brad Pitt made a surprise visit to Ho Chi Minh City last November during which they also went to the orphanage to meet children there.
Media have reported that Jolie has filed for adoption as a single parent.
In Hanoi, locals welcomed the news, saying the Hollywood star would be able to provide the child with a good life.
"I think it's good, it's a very good thing to do. She is doing a kind of charity. There are many orphans in Vietnam and if they are adopted they will have better living conditions, I think Jolie's family is very rich," said Nguyen Xuan Hoan, 26, an IT engineer.
"If they adopt children, the children will be taken care of by someone, it will be guaranteed that they will have a better education, so when they grow up they will be well-educated and become good citizens in Vietnam or the U.S," added Dao Thi Van Minh, a 55-year-old grandmother.
Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt, have three children: 5-year-old son Maddox, adopted from Cambodia; 2-year-old daughter Zahara, adopted from Ethiopia; and another daughter, Shiloh, who was born to the couple in May 2006.
Jolie, who is a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been active in promoting better living conditions for refugees around the world. In November the actress took time to speak to Burmese refugees while filming in India. Last week Jolie visited the Oure Cassoni refugee camp in Chad, Africa. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
