- Story Text: Mikhail Khodorkovsky, jailed founder of former Russian oil giant Yukos, was given one of Russia's top literary awards on Wednesday night (January 13) for his correspondence with a Russian Booker Prize winning author.
The award given annually by Russia's 'Znamya' literary journal, was accepted on Khodorkovsky's behalf by his daughter, Anastasia.
Sentenced to eight years in prison in 2005 for fraud and tax evasion, Khodorkovsky has been an outspoken critic of Kremlin. He consistently denies all charges against him, claiming they were filed against him based on political motivations.
Khodorkovsky is currently being tried on new charges of money laundering and embezzlement which carry a punishment of up to 22 years in prison.
The European Court of Human Rights is also set for a hearing into the Yukos case in March filed by Khodorkovsky's lawyers against the Russian government for bankrupting the oil company. They seek 100 billion U.S dollars in damages. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
