- Story Text: There are high hopes a number of Kurdish films could find their way into cinemas around the world.
The northern Iraqi city of Arbil, in the country's Kurdish region, is hosting its third film festival, promoting the best of Kurdish short films.
During four days, around forty films, including five documentaries, will be shown at the event which is organised by the General Directorate of Cinema in the Ministry of Culture and Youth in the Kurdistan regional government.
Artists, directors and writers were among those who attended the opening day on Wednesday (May 4).
The director of the General Directorate of Cinema, Shakhwan Mohammed, said after two previous successful festivals in 2004 and 2006, this year's event had been eagerly anticipated.
The Arbil Cinema Directorate has produced 15 of the short films and the five documentaries.
But there are also twenty films from elsewhere, including contributions from Turkey, Iran, Germany, the Netherlands and Britain.
Kurdish artist Anwar Shikhani said the Kurds were not experienced at producing long films, but the festival was the perfect opportunity and a good step forward in building strong Kurdish cinema in the future.
There will be three awards for those films considered the best.
One moviegoer, who spent the day in front of the silver screen, was in no doubt. They were all great.
"The films are very nice, each one better than the one before," he said, adding "God willing, the Kurdistan of Iraq can present the best." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
