- Story Text: The conviction of Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is upheld by a court, but her lawyer says she will appeal to the high court in the next 60 days.
A court in military-ruled Myanmar on Friday (October 2) upheld the conviction of the country's pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi for breaching the terms of her house arrest, her lawyer said.
The Yangon Divisional Court ruled on a lower court's sentencing of Suu Kyi to three years in jail for violating the terms of her house arrest.
After the sentence was ordered, halved and then suspended by the country's junta chief, Suu Kyi was returned to house arrest where she is to remain at least until the suspended term is served.
An appeal would be submitted to the high court after certain procedures had been cleared, lawyer Nyan Win told reporters after the ruling, adding there was a 60-day timeframe for the process.
Nyan Win said he was not disappointed in Friday's court ruling because he believed there was still "one window for us".
Suu Kyi, who has been under detention since May 2003, was charged with violating the terms of her house arrest in May this year after an uninvited American sneaked into her house and stayed there for two days.
She has been under house arrest or in jail for some 14 years over the last two decades.
