Summary:On May 14 1948, the British mandate in Palestine ended after 25 years and the state of Israel was born. That morning, the British High Commissioner, Sir Alan Cunningham, left Jerusalem and the British administration of the country, character- ised in its last three years by a bitter guerrilla war waged by Jewish extremists, officially ceased. A few hours before the mandate ended, the first independent Jewish state for 2,000 years was proclaimed in Tel Aviv by the Jewish National Council. The ceremony was held in the Tel Aviv museum and the proclamation was broadcast by David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of the new state of Israel.
