  • Story Text: Several thousand people packed into a Bucharest sports centre to attend the final of the annual Roma beauty contest. Fifteen girls aged 15 to 22 from various Roma areas of Romania were selected to participate in the competition.
    They displayed their belly-dancing skills to the enthusiastic dancing audience and five-member jury, which included three prominent Roma businessmen, one host of a Romanian popular music and dance TV show and the winner of the last year's contest.
    Belly-dancing has long been an important part of Romania's Roma culture and for centuries belly dancers have been invited to perform at Roma weddings and various celebrations.
    This year the crown went to Cristina Pucean, a 15-year-old school student from Stefanesti village outside Bucharest.
    "I think this prize will change my whole life for the better. My family and my friends supported me. I wish all the girls who will be taking part in this contest after me good luck and that they will be able to display their talents in the best way," Pucean said after being awarded a victory ribbon on stage.
    The first Roma beauty contest took place in the Romanian capital in 1991 and has since turned into major event in the life of Romania's Roma community and those who love Roma music and dance.
    This year's show was broadcast live on one of Romania's music channels.
