Two weeks after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed much of Port-au-Prince, US troops and UN peacekeepers worked together to extricate human remains from the ruins of a fallen police station.
The joint forces managed to remove one body from the rubble and believe 11 more may be buried inside.
A steam shovel plowed through the mountains of dusty concrete and rocks, trying to clear away the debris.
"We are cleaning out a building that is behind us, a building that is in ruins, that fell," said German Molina, a UN peacekeeper from Spain.
Meanwhile Lieutenant colonel David Doyle of the US's 82nd Airborne Division said his mandate stretched well beyond recovering bodies.
"My mission right now is to work with the UN police to help establish security and protect the people of Haiti so that their institutions can start to take care of their people. So we're coordinating with the UN police in our area to do joint patrols, to walk the area with them, so we can learn from their experience and better help the people of Haiti," he said.
The January 12 quake killed up to 200,000 people. A huge U.S.-led international relief operation is struggling to feed, house and care for hundreds of thousands of hungry, homeless survivors, many of them injured. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
