- Story Text: The cyclist is an endangered species in the Russian cities. Riding a bicycle in Russia is always a challenge, you may hit a crack along a road or to be neglected by car drivers who may cause bike accidents. As the cities are overcrowded with growing number of cars and therefore extensive traffic jams the number of the cyclists are on the increase.
Bicycle enthusiasts in St Petersburg demanding respect from the car drivers and local authorities, staged "naked protest" in the centre of the city.
"I demand that the authorities of the city to build bicycle lanes and bicycle parking, let bicyclists to deliver their bicycles in the underground metro, and I stand for that our car drivers should respect cyclists,"
said Roman Lutoshkin, bicyclists' rights activist.
While Russia is not yet a nation of bicycle fanatics, a small but active group of locals is promoting the sport within St Petersburg and trying to raise the country's profile abroad. But they are sure that the riding problems bicyclists are experiencing in the city should be taken more seriously by city authorities to avoid severe bike accidents. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
