- Story Text: Taiwan-born designer Jason Wu met the media on Thursday (October 7) after unveiling his Spring 2011 collection in New York.
The 28-year-old designer of Michelle Obama's white inaugural gown, also designed a dress for Taiwan's first lady, Christine Chow Ma, to be shown on the National Day on Sunday (October 10).
"What I gave her was classic and simple, but in a very much my style, and I think, you know, it should go beyond trends, because that's how I design all the time, I want people to see my work as timeless and something that's going to be relevant for many years, not just for one season," Wu told journalists.
Wu displayed works of his 2011 Spring designs inspired by the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes.
The designs included shots of violet, hot pink and lime knitwear, with prints and embellishments. Many of the pieces featured individually shaped and hand painted petals with truffle-style skirts.
Wu launched his first collection of accessories at New York Fashion Week last month, and will also work on an architectural project in Taiwan's capital, Taipei.
"You know in the last year my work has really expanded into things that are outside of clothing in itself, and that includes launching accessories which is other components and glasses, and now I am consulting a building in Taiwan and so many other things. I think I'm just beginning to be able to express my aesthetics and my design sensibility in more ways than one, it's very exciting," said Wu.
Born in Taipei, Wu grew up with an interest in sewing clothes for Barbie dolls, and first started to learn about fashion designing after moving to Vancouver Canada at the age of nine.
He entered Parsons College of Design at the age of 18, and had his first line of design announced at a 2006 fashion show. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
