- Story Text: Six-week-old black jaguar baby born at Berlin zoo holds first photo session.
"Ambato" was born to a black jaguar mother and is developing beautifully, according to Berlin's Friedrichsfelde zoo.
His weight at birth of just 700 grams has turned into a substantial 4 kilograms within the past month and a half, according to Ambato's keeper Angelika Berkling.
Black jaguars are relatively rare, she told reporters during Friday's photo session.
"Not all jaguars give birth to black babies," Berkling said.
"His mother is black but she might as well could have given birth to a freckled baby. So we're happy that he is black."
According to Berkling, "What's special about (Ambato) is that the spots are beautifully visible."
The cub's mother "April" -- which is also black -- was born at Friedrichsfelde zoo eight years ago.
Jaguars are native to Central and South America, according to zoo keepers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
