- Story Text: Thai police took murder suspect Anuchit to the resort town of Pattaya on Sunday (March 4) where he allegedly shot dead two Russian women to re-enact the crime.
Twenty-four-year old Anuchit used a motorcycle to travel to the scene where Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, were killed on Jomtien beach, 150 kilometres (90 miles) east of Bangkok last Saturday (February 24). The unemployed suspect said he intended to rob the victims but killed them instead as one of them saw his face and screamed.
Although Anuchit confessed he was the killer, the police believe he was not acting alone and efforts were being made to find his accomplices.
Anuchit was caught in blurry pictures on a hotel security camera arriving on a motorcycle, walking through a garden to the beach, then later walking back.
Six-bullets from a pistol were fired at Tsimfer and Svirkova as they were resting on deck chairs. The act took nine seconds to complete.
Forensic tests on the pistol, hidden in a dumpster by a friend who bought it from Anuchit, revealed a match in shell casings with those left at the scene, police said.
Police said Anuchit was suspected of 10 other robberies, but he had left the Russian women's wallets behind.
He already faces charges for robbing a South Korean tourist in January and if he is charged with murder, he may be given the death sentence.
"According to the law, his penalty is quite severe. He is being charged with intending to kill others carrying a pistol and bullets without legal permission, carrying a pistol in public without reason. He could face life in jail or a death sentence," said eastern region police chief Lieutenant General Aswin Kwanmuang.
Police have not said why a gunman would be hired to kill the two women, but media reports have pointed to inter-gang rivalry in Pattaya, a city notorious as a haven for international criminals and where prostitutes from the former Soviet Union are common.
