At least six miners are missing and two died after an earthquake occurred at the Rudna mine in Polkowice in southwestern Poland, spokeswoman for KGHM, owner of the copper mine, said on Wednesday (November 30).
Search efforts continued into the early hours of the morning for the missing miners after the earthquake struck at 9:09 p.m. (2009GMT) on Tuesday (November 29), state-run copper producer KGHM spokeswoman Joanna Piatek said.
She added that rescuers found a miner who died underground, and another man died amongst those who were evacuated.
"Seven miners were trapped underground. One was reached by the rescuers but unfortunately a dead body was found. The rescue action is still in progress and we are searching for six miners," Piatek said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was very shallow, only 10 km (6.2 miles) deep, which would have magnified its effect at the mine.
Three miners who were injured the most are in hospital, their condition is stable, and their life is not threatened, according to RMF FM. They suffered backbone and head injuries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
