- Story Text:Chapecoense fans were still reeling from shock on Thursday (December 1) after a plane crash in Colombia which killed 71 people including most of their Brazilian soccer team. They gathered at the teams' stadium in the southern Brazilian city of Chapeco, to continue mourning the victims.
According to initial findings by aviation officials, the aircraft had no fuel on impact, prompting an investigation into why the plane flew under those conditions.
The comments by the civil aviation authority late Wednesday night (November 30) confirmed Bolivian pilot Miguel Quiroga's final words to the control tower at Medellin's airport on a crackly audio obtained by Colombian media.
Chapecoense fan, Carlos Valleston, said they had not left the stadium.
"There is a feeling that cannot be explained," he said.
Another fan, Emiliane Bueno, said they wanted to feel united.
"It is a feeling of unity. We are trying to spend the last minutes here. I know that this is not going to end. It was a team that marked the lives of each one of us who were here. Beyond the humility that they had, they were practically part of our family because as organized fans, we accompanied them to all parts," she said. "Not just on the field," added Valleston.
Fans have left, flowers and messages for the victims at the Chapecoense stadium.
Some of the messages are very touching, such as this drawing, showing children mourning their loss.
Yuri Lima, described the feeling of the fans.
"We as part of a Chapecoense family, are more than just a team, it's our family. We are going through a very hard time but this moment came so that we can grow."
A recording of the pilot's final words can be heard telling the control tower the plane was "in total failure, total electrical failure, without fuel," he said.
The pilot of the doomed aircraft requested urgent permission to land before the audio went silent. The BAe 146, made by BAE Systems Plc, slammed into a mountainside next to the town of La Union outside Medellin.
Only six on board the LAMIA Bolivia charter flight survived, including three of the Chapecoense soccer team en route to the Copa Sudamericana final, the biggest game in their history, a journalist and two crew members.
Club Communications Director Andrei Copetti spoke about the three Chapecoense players and journalist Rafael Henzel, who survived the accident. Two of the Bolivian flight crew, Ximena Suarez and Erwin Tumiri, were bruised but not in critical condition.
"The condition of the four survivors, of the three athletes and also journalist Rafael Henzel are serious. The one in the most serious condition is goalkeeper Jackson Follman. They are all stable and at this time without risk of death," Copetti said.
The bodies of the victims have all been identified and are being prepared for transport by military aircraft back to Brazil, Copetti added.
"This morning we concluded the identification of all the bodies. At this moment all the bodies are in preparation to be transported to Chapeco on board Brazilian force aircraft. We still do not have a specific time but hopefully the release will be as soon as possible of the bodies to be transported here," he said.
Copetti said the coffins will arrive in Chapeco by midday on Friday (December 2) at the earliest and will be taken directly to the club's stadium where a collective wake will be held, with Brazilian President Michel Temer expected to attend. A spokesman for Temer said his schedule had not been decided yet. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
