- Story Text: Syria's President Hafez al-Assad arrived in Tehran on Saturday (September 22), signalling his continuing support for Iran in its denunciation of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.
Assad, on his first visit to Tehran, was given a full state welcome by President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. He said he had arrived "with great enthusiasm" to meet "our dearest brethen".
Iranian sources said Assad probably had a message from the United States (US) for Rafsanjani, concerning the Gulf crisis. Washington hopes Assad will convey the US determination to maintain United Nations (UN)-mandated sanctions against Iraq.
On Friday (September 21), Rafsanjani told worshippers at weekly prayers that Iran was willing to help establish peace in the region "through our Islamic role, despite the aggression against us" -- a reference to the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war. Later, Rafsanjani addressed a huge crowd at a military parade marking the 10th anniversary of Iraq's invasion of Iran. He said that "two diabolical forces (Iraq and the United States) which were lined up against us are now facing each other...we are next to a powder keg and should be alert and vigilant". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
