- Story Text: Thousands of protesters, angry at government moves to relax curbs on farm imports, fought with riot police in Seoul on Saturday (September 22).
Protesters threw fire bombs and the police used tear gas against the demonstrators. There were no reports of serious injuries.
Police said that 1,665 farmers, students and dissidents were detained but most of them would be released with a warning.
Saturday's rally was called jointly by a nationwide farmers' organisation and a dissident coalition group to denounce Seoul's moves to open up domestic markets to agricultural imports.
The protesters also demanded President Roh Tae-Woo's resignation, the dissolution of parliament and new general elections. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
