- Story Text: Dozens of coffins carrying those killed when a plane flying Brazil's Chapecoense soccer team crashed into a Colombian mountain were transported to a Medellin airport to be repatriated for their journey home on Friday (December 02).
The disaster on Monday (November 28) killed 71 people and shocked soccer fans the world over. The LAMIA Bolivia BAe146 airliner apparently ran out of fuel, lost electrical power and was preparing for an emergency landing when it crashed.
Locals turned out to pay their final respects to the victims.
"They are forever to be in our hearts. This is all very unfortunate for everyone. Forever," said Colombian local, Marisa Gonzalez.
The convoy carried the coffins of 64 dead Brazilians with the remains of the victims scheduled to arrive early on Saturday (December 03) morning for funeral services in Chapeco, the club's small farming hometown in southern Brazil.
Colombian Air Force Commander Carlos Buenos Vargas recounted efforts to retrieve the bodies from the crash site.
"It was three days of intense work, making use of the entire capacity of the risk system, the Colombian air force, national police. The air force had the mission to arrive at the site that's five minutes from the air force base here in Rio Negro, Antioquia, for rescue work, thinking first about the survivors, who today, thanks to god, recovered in sufficiently today," he said.
Some 100,000 fans of the soccer team, about half of Chapeco's population, are likely to attend, as is Gianni Infantino, president of world soccer governing body FIFA. Brazilian President Michel Temer will attend a ceremony at the airport after the coffins arrive, but he will not be at the wake in the stadium, his office said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
