- Story Text: Preparations for the 2007 Oktoberfest are well under way in the German city of Munich. And despite the possibility of an increase in the price of beer, organisers say they are not worried.
Construction of the world-famous Oktoberfest beer tents was underway on Thursday (August 23), as Munich prepares for the 174th Oktoberfest.
The first Oktoberfest was held in the year 1810 in honour of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Munich locals refer to Oktoberfest as "die Wies'n" because of its location - Theresienwiese - a large field named after Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
The price of beer has not been set but organisers say it will remain affordable.
"The price of beer. They raised the sales tax by three percent that is already 25 cents. One must not forget every year we build a new tent and therefore we are confronted with salary rises, and also the rent for the Wies'n has increased. So if you consider it is a home brewed beer with and six percent alcohol and the entire ambience, you can't argue. The discussion about the price of beer is part of it. The Wies'n has to stay affordable and it is affordable," said Toni Roiderer, speaker of the Wies'n Publican.
On September 22nd the first keg will be tapped by the mayor in the Schottenhamel tent, and the festivities, which include rides, food, games, music, and special Oktoberfest beer.
The 16-day festival will end on October 7. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
