- Story Text:The Syrian Army said that Aleppo had returned to the country on Friday (December 2) following its advance on the eastern part of the city this week.
The Syrian government assault backed by allied militia has driven the rebels from more than a third of the territory they held in eastern Aleppo, threatening to crush the rebellion in its most important urban stronghold.
"The myth of eastern and western Aleppo ends today. Aleppo returns to Syria and Syrians return to Aleppo," said Fawaz Mustafa, a dean in the Syrian army, on Friday.
In Aleppo's Hanano neighbourhood, locals have started to clean up after the damage in an effort to bring back some sense of normalcy.
One elderly man told Reuters he would never leave Aleppo, saying: "I am like an oak tree. If I get out of my land I will die."
MEMBER OF ALEPPO CITY MUNICIPALITY, OMAR QUSHRA, SAYING:
Omar Qushra, a member of the Aleppo city municipality, said workers had already started to rebuild some parks and streets.
"We started to re-plant the damaged plants and cleaning squares and wreckage, as well as cleaning the burnt things. By god the area will be rehabilitated in the future," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
