- Story Text: Some 2,000 tonnes of sand were dumped outside Berlin's main train station, the Hauptbahnhof, where the artists were busy working on their sculptures, some of which reach heights of up to 4 metres.
This year's theme "Welcome to Paradise" was chosen to allow the artists more creativity again, following last year's competition which was dominated by the World Cup hosted by Germany.
Sandsation organiser Dirk Hoehnerbach told Reuters Television that the event was "an art festival."
Visitors like what they saw on the first day of the five day event which sees a winner next Thursday.
"The most fascinating part in my view is how something is created out of a huge pile of sand, how they start with all this sand and then turn it into such fine sculptures," Lars marx said, adding "I find that very impressive."
One artist from Italy who was working on a giant rat sitting on top of a large pile of cheese spoke of the difficulties the recent poor weather created for him.
"With the rain and the wind today, the tail of the rat broke off," Gianni said.
"I made a very long tail and now I had to change the composition. But I'm still happy with the outcome." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
