- Story Text: Taiwan's First Lady Chow Mei-ching (Christine Chow-Ma) travelled to Moscow for the first time on Thursday (June 10) to attend a performance by Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance Theatre.
First Lady Chow Mei-ching supports the dance troupe, which performed the ballet 'Whisper of Flowers' at the Mossoviet Theatre as part of the annual Chekhov International Theatre Festival held in Moscow in honour of the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov.
Troupe director Lin Hwai-Min welcomed her support.
"Our First Lady is a very special lady who is not a 'madam', she supports baseball team, orphans, aboriginal kids and the performing arts. She always bought ticket by herself, invites friends and comes backstage to encourage us," he said, adding, "She is very charming, she knows the name of each dancer which I think is a really great support."
Lin Hwai-min created the dance piece for his Cloud Gate Theatre set to selected music from Johann Sebastian Bach's Suites for Solo Cello.
Tens of thousands of artificial orchid petals were scattered on the stage corresponding with the ballet's title, "Whisper of Flowers".
"Whisper" is partly inspired by Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" and partly by Tsao Hsueh-chin's "The Dream of the Red Chamber," an 18th-century chronicle of a house in decline.
After the performance, Chow Mei-ching met in theatre's foyer with the director general of the Festival Valery Shadrin, organisers, troupe and guests.
Shadrin thanked Taiwan's First lady for her significant support. Guests and actors applauded as Chow Mei-ching embraced him after his welcoming words.
The Chekhov International Theatre Festival will last till July 30 in various venues around Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
