Summary:King Abdullah was the first ruler of the independent state of Jordan. He came to the throne in 1946 and enjoyed a brief, turbulent rule, during which he extended Jordanian territory by annexing the West Bank from Israel during the 1948 war. But on July 20 1951, he was assassinated by a Palestinian terrorist.
