- Story Text: Veterans of the Soviet era ice hockey played veterans of NHL team in charity match at the Red Square on Saturday (December 9).
The unseasonably warm temperatures made the sight all the more startling. Skating rink opened for the public on Monday (December 4) on the cobblestones across from Lenin's mausoleum.
Legendary coaches Viktor Tikhonov and Scotty Bowman were leading the teams, while Vladimir Tretiak and Billy Smith were opposing players.
The match honoured the 60th anniversary of the birth of Russian hockey, the 50th anniversary of the former Soviet Union's first hockey victory at the Olympic Games and the 25th anniversary of the Great Five: the KLM line of Larionov, Sergei Makarov and Vladimir Krutov and defence players Fetisov and Alexei Kasatonov.
The KLM line represented Russian Team, while the opposing World team included former National Hockey League stars Paul Coffey, Peter Skripko and Mats Naslund. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
