- Story Text: New Hamburg SV coach Martin Jol says his decision to take over Hamburg job was easy.
Bundesliga club Hamburg SV has officially presented new coach Martin Jol during a news conference in the northern German port city on Wednesday (May 21).
Dutchman Jol replaced his compatriot Huub Stevens who resigned from the club to coach PSV Eindhoven.
"We are absolutely delighted that he is here and that we succeeded in getting a coach who is from the Premier League and who for years collected experience. He has been a successful coach for many years and his personality, his charisma and his competence added to this success," HSV boss Bernd Hoffmann told reporters.
52-year-old Jol, whose contract with HSV runs until 2010, called his new employers "not just a traditional club."
"To me the most important thing is the club. It's not just a traditional club, it's also a great club, together with Bayern Munich maybe the greatest club in Germany," said the Dutchman.
Jol is the former head coach of Tottenham Hotspur. He became the manager of the English Premier League club in 2004 but was replaced by Juande Ramos in 2007.
Jol said he had several enquiries over the past few months but turned them all down.
"My decision (to sign with HSV) only took five minutes after I discussed it with my family," Jol told reporters.
Asked about his plans for HSV, he said: "One thing is clear, that we want to play in Europe."
Hamburg SV beat Karlsruhe 7-0 on the final day of the German League season on Saturday (May 17) and qualified for the UEFA Cup after finishing fourth.
"It took a few days but we are one hundred percent convinced that this is just the right coach at the right time for our club," said Dietmar Beiersdorfer, HSV's sporting director.
