You know, August Wilson, that's why I became a professional actress close to 30 years ago, when the August Wilson play called "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" and then it was "Seven Guitars," it's just being a part of my life, so it just seems really a propos that I would then be doing 'Fences' with Denzel Washington, it's my life." That - how tight we all were is my favorite experience." You know, we felt like we were allies to someone else's truth and we're all very appreciative for that." - Story Text: Awards season got underway on Sunday (December 11) with the 22nd annual Critics' Choice Awards in the Los Angeles coastal town of Santa Monica.
"La La Land," a modern day musical set in Los Angeles and starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, took the top award, for best picture.
"It was so special making it, we rehearsed for such a long time, and we all got really, really close making it and have been celebrating it for a year now, so it's been really special to see the response. That - how tight we all were is my favorite experience," Stone said on the red carpet as she arrived for the show.
Viola Davis took home the best supporting actress award for her role in "Fences," based on the award-winning play by August Wilson.
"It was just a role and a project of a lifetime. You know, August Wilson, that's why I became a professional actress close to 30 years ago, when the August Wilson play called "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" and then it was "Seven Guitars," it's just being a part of my life, so it just seems really a propos that I would then be doing 'Fences' with Denzel Washington, it's my life," she said.
The best supporting actor award went Mahershala Ali for his role in "Moonlight," a coming-of-age film about a gay black man in an impoverished Miami neighborhood.
"I think a lot of us experienced that just in shooting it, from the way in which we all individually reacted to reading the script, to the actual experience of filming it, it felt healing in some way. You know, we felt like we were allies to someone else's truth and we're all very appreciative for that," Ali said.
