A fireball from a truck carrying oil products on one of Kenya's main highways has engulfed 13 vehicles and killed more than 25 people, a county official said on Sunday (December 11).
The accident happened late on Saturday night 10 kilometers (six miles) north of the central town of Naivasha.
The lorry heading to Uganda lost control and rammed into several vehicles burning the occupants alive.
Rescue efforts were hindered by flames emanating from the chemicals that were burning.
"We have received twenty bodies, more have been sent to the hospital so I am yet to confirm the final count. There were some victims who were evacuated to Nairobi directly from the scene, towards Nairobi and Kijabe, so when I talk about nine they are not the total number of survivors, there may be others who went to Nairobi and Kijabe. So we may not have the cumulative figure am just talking about those who were brought to Naivasha," said Chief of health services Nakuru County, Charles Mwaura.
A Kenyan paramilitary police vehicle ferrying police officers was among the vehicles that burnt.
Police were busy retrieving the bodies as well as guns that the deceased officers were carrying.
The death toll could rise as victims were taken to different hospitals and the officla number is yet to be confirmed.
