  • Story Text: Multi-talented Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez talks about her music and her desire to focus on family as she promotes new film "Bordertown", a thriller examining the murders of hundreds of women in a Mexican border town.
    Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez said on Monday (February 09) she is proud to play in "Bordertown", a Latin-themed thriller co-starring Lopez, Antonio Banderas and Martin Sheen and scheduled to screen at the Berlin Festival later this week.
    Lopez, also the film's producer, will receive the Artists for Amnesty Award in Berlin. The Puerto Rican actress plays an investigative journalist reporting on the serial killings of women in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez.
    "When Greg (Director Gregory Nava) told me about the situation down in Juarez I was horrified and couldn't believe it. On top of that I became very impassioned, I felt like it was something I absolutely had to do, I felt that it was my responsibility in that moment, for whatever reason, to be doing it -not only as a human being, as a woman, but also as a Latina, to have to do that, and be part of this project has enriched my life in many ways," the star told reporters during a news conference to promote the film's release in Madrid.
    Lopez, 36, explained that she made the film hoping to bring attention to the Juarez tragedy and pressure the Mexican government to bring justice to those responsible of the crimes.
    Lopez catapulted her acting career with her starring role in "Selena," a biopic on the Latin Tejano star who sang in Spanish and was on the verge of an English-language crossover prior to her death. Ten years after "Selena," and following a multiplatinum recording career in English, Lopez is ready to sing in Spanish once again.
    "Como Ama Una Mujer" ("How a Woman Loves"), Lopez's first Spanish-language album, hits stores April 3 through Epic Records, supported by groundbreaking media synergies.
    "This is a dream to me. The film "Selena" inspired me to sing and I recorded a demo in Spanish back then. That was my dream, I always though that my singing career would be in English, believe it or not, because I love the music (Spanish)-- Mark Anthony, Selena, you know back then that was really popular. That's what I wanted to do but when I took the demo to Sony Music they went like 'but you speak English, let's do an album in English first'. I wasn't going to say no, so I said OK and that's how my career took a different road," she said.
    "Como Ama Una Mujer" sounds nothing like Lopez's previous English fare; it is quintessentially Latin in its big arrangements, romantic themes and vocally dramatic interpretations. With no musical indication of crossover aspirations into English, the album is not exactly what the world might have expected, but exactly what Lopez wanted to do.
    Lopez explained that she has become much more work-selective --she wants to be able to look back and feel proud of her job. She also stated that she is ready to focus on her family. "Family and my husband are for me the most important things -work comes in second place. It took me some time to learn that," Lopez confessed.
