Nigel Farage, the interim leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP), held a mock ambassador's reception in central London on Wednesday (November 23) evening praising a "political revolution" that had brought Brexit and the election of Donald Trump.
Speaking to a room of financial backers at London's luxury Ritz hotel, Farage called 2016 "one of those great historic years".
"It's the year of the big political revolution and there are a lot of people in this room who fought hard over the years to make Brexit happen. Brexit was the first brick knocked out of the establishment wall, and then what we got on November 8, with the election of The Donald, was something of a completely different order," said Farage, the Brexit campaigner who U.S. President-elect Trump said would be great as Britain's envoy to Washington.
"For those that are here that aren't particularly happy with what's happened in 2016, I've got some really bad news for you… it's going to get a bloody sight worse next year," he said to a cheering audience.
"We're all portrayed as being old and angry and negative, but in a poll after the referendum of UKIP supporters showed 86% of UKIP supporters thought this country now, post-Brexit, had a great future, and we do," he added.
Prime Minister Theresa May's government dismissed Trump's suggestion this week of "Ambassador Farage" saying there was no vacancy as Kim Darroch is currently serving as Britain's envoy to Washington.
Farage also offered party guests pyramids of Ferrero Rocher chocolates, a joking reference to a long-running British 'ambassador's reception' TV advert which cast the gold-foiled confection as the delicacy of choice for diplomats. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
