- Story Text: Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte and Indonesian President, Joko Widodo held talks to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries on Wednesday (November 23).
Rutte is on a four day visit to South East Asia's biggest nation.
The two countries signed a number of Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on trade, infrastructure, education and environment.
A range of issues were discussed during the bilateral meeting.
"Indonesia and the Netherlands, as the president already highlighted, face the same kind of challenges, including terrorism and foreign terrorist fighters, the effects of raging temperatures and sea levels and the need for sustainable food production. I've just had extensive talks with the president and his delegation. We concluded once again that there are many things that unite the Netherlands and Indonesia," Rutte said after the meeting concluded.
"President Widodo and I look forward to enhancing our ties and we see plenty of opportunities for doing so. And that's why I've come here with a large government delegation and with representatives of knowledge institutions, 110 businesses from sectors including water and maritime infrastructure, climate and waste management, life sciences and health, and horticulture," he added.
The Netherlands is one of the main export destinations for Indonesia in Europe.
Both countries share a common history as the Netherlands colonised Indonesia for centuries.
