Summary:June 17 1953 - East Berlin. That day, some 50,000 East Germans took to the streets in a sudden and violent rebellion against the regime under which they lived. The uprising began in East Berlin but spread to many other parts of the country as people seized the chance to protest against wage rates, food-rationing and other issues. But the rebellion was brief. Before the end of the day, Soviet tanks were out in force and the protest was stamped out.
