- Story Text:Protesters who backed Haitian presidential hopeful Maryse Narcisse took to the streets of Port-au-Prince on Wednesday (November 23) to claim victory for their candidate, amidst fears of violence as the nation awaits the election result.
Haitians turned out to vote in presidential, parliamentary and local elections on November 20.
The elections were meant to end a year of political and economic uncertainty. A previous vote in October 2015 was annulled due to allegations of widespread fraud.
Official results from the vote are not expected until next week but tensions are already riding high in Haiti.
Earlier this week, police fired tear gas as demonstrators backing Narcisse protested.
Although no violence was reported on Wednesday (November 23), this Narcisse supporter told Reuters he would only except a victory for his candidate.
"We have voted for Doctor Maryse. We will not listen to anyone. The result in February 2017 needs to be Maryse Narcisse entering the National Palace," he said.
Narcisse is from the Fanmi Lavalas party founded by former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
As the votes get tallied, supporters from the more than two dozen candidates competing for the presidency are eagerly awaiting the results.
"The results should reflect what the people decided," said an unidentified Narcisse supporter.
Narcisse supporters have already claimed victory in the vote, as has rival candidate, Jovenel Moise.
Fearing a showdown between political rivals, current Haitian President Jocelerme Privert called on all candidates to respect the outcome of the vote.
"My wish is for my fellow candidates to show the world what they have, just like the French, just like the Americans, a political maturity which allows for a win without triumph or a loss without arms," he said.
Unless one candidate wins more than 50 percent, the election will go to a second round in January. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
