- Story Text: Doctors at a field clinic set up by Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) forces treated civilians fleeing the Kokjali neighbourhood on the eastern outskirts of the Islamic State-held city of Mosul on Tuesday (November 22).
The Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) forces, known also as Golden Division and troops from Brigade 16 announced capture of Kokjali district in central Mosul from the IS militants earlier this month.
Doctors at the clinic said they treated some 150 to 250 civilian casualties per day, most suffering from shrapnel wounds from mortar shells fired by IS militants or sniper fire as militants use civilians as human shields.
Lieutenant Colonel Khalil Kadhim of the CTS said that the clinic performs many amputations.
"Most of the cases treated here are civilians including children, women and elderly people," he said.
Outside the city's eastern limits, hundreds of civilians streamed out, packed into military pickups and trucks and others fled on foot carrying belongings as smoke still could be seen at the far outskirts of the neighbourhood and intermittent gunfire could be heard.
The checkpoint in Kokjali, manned by counter-terrorism forces and local police, is the first stop for residents leaving eastern Mosul.
Mosul still has a population of 1.5 million people, much more than any of the other cities captured by Islamic State two years ago in Iraq and neighboring Syria.
Iraqi regular troops and special forces, Shi'ite militias, Kurdish peshmerga fighters and other groups backed by U.S.-led air strikes launched a campaign on Oct 17 to retake Mosul.
Winning back the city would signal the defeat of the Iraqi half of a cross border caliphate which Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared from the pulpit of a Mosul mosque two years ago. Islamic State also holds large parts of neighbouring Syria. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
