- Story Text: A large group of displaced families filed towards the settlement of Kokjali on the outskirts of Mosul on Tuesday (November 22) after fleeing the city, largely still held by Islamic State.
The families, including dozens of children, carried their belongings and waved white flags as they walked towards the district, under the control of Iraqi government forces.
The campaign to capture Mosul started on Oct. 17, with air and ground support from a U.S.-led coalition.
The militants are dug in among more than a million civilians as a defence tactic to hamper the strikes.
Nearly 69,000 people have been displaced because of the fighting, moving from villages and towns around the city to government-held areas, according to U.N. estimates.
The figure does not include the thousands of people rounded up in villages around Mosul and forced to accompany Islamic State fighters to cover their retreat towards the city as human shields. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
