Summary:On July 27 1953 after two years of negotiations UN and North Korean officials finally hammered out a form of armistice which brought an end to the Korean War. It had begun in June 1950, when North Korean armies struck across the 38th parallel into South Korea. The USA responded by sending massive reinforcements in support of the South Koreans. For the next eighteen months, a full-scale war raged, in which five million people died.
