- Story Text: The Ukrainian prime minister discuss energy issues and joint projects with his Hungarian counterpart. The prime minister of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych was on an one-day official visit to Hungary on Tuesday (March 6). During a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Ferenc Gyurcsany their talks focused on energy safety, and a number of joint projects.
The Ukrainian delegation discussed cooperation between the two countries in energy, transport, privatisation and investment spheres. The two prime ministers also signed a number of bilateral agreements, including a 'Plan of mutual actions of the cabinet of Ukraine and the government of Hungary for 2007'.
After signing the agreements Yanukovych and Gyurcsany held a joint news conference.
"We will be able to realize development investments of some 100 million USD in Ukraine," Gyurcsany said.
"My Ukrainian partner and I agreed that our interest is to maintain the energy policy cooperation in the export of electrical energy into Hungary. We will develop these relations, we will confirm the long-term contracts, and if possible, raise them to an even higher level," Gyurcsany said.
He also announced that Hungary and Ukraine will build a hydroelectric power station with 20 megawatt power for the organisation of export supplies of electric power to Hungary.
"Hungary is getting 12 billion cubic metres of gas from Ukraine, but only use eight, so obviously we will have to modernise the system and we already made proposals on the implementation. There will be underground gas storage built on the territory of Ukraine for about one billion cubic metres gas in order to stabilise the gas supplies not only for Hungary, but also for Europe," Yanukovych said.

Yanukovych is also scheduled to meet Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom later on Tuesday (March 6) after the prime ministers participate in a business forum organised by the Hungarian Investment and Trade Development Agency (ITDH). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
