- Story Text: Adam Sandler and Katie Holmes are sharing the billing in a new comedy, "Jack & Jill," about the dysfunctional relationship between a twin brother and sister.
Sandler plays the parts of both Jack and Jill. (The role required him to appear in drag for half the film.) He also helped write the screenplay for the offbeat story. Holmes portrays his on-screen wife.
Sandler talked about what inspired his humor.
"Most of the time, family," said the actor, 45. "Most of the time stuff that we talked about at the house growing up. Now, my new family. My wife and my children. Katie Holmes."
Holmes shared why she wanted to make a film aimed at keeping audiences laughing.
"Well, I was really excited to be a part of this. I've been an fan of Adam's forever. And, I have always wanted to work with him, so it was very exciting. And I thought that, you know, I just love this story," she said.
Sandler commented on why he was interested in playing a dual role.
"I thought it was really interesting to have a brother and sister who were extremely close. And one wants to remain close and the other one wants to kind of go on with his life," Sandler said.
Holmes credited Sandler for helping her create her character.
"The great part of being part of this is the generosity that I felt and, you know, Adam, you were always, he was always giving me new things to try and do," Holmes said.
But Sandler said Holmes came up with many interesting ideas, too.
"You came up with a lot of new stuff," said Sandler. "She was very much in control, Katie Holmes. We had fun, a light time on the set. But at the same time we took it serious. And Katie took her stuff serious, right?"
"I just wanted to help. Do my part," laughed Holmes, 32. "'Cause Jill is very, and Jack, were very funny."
Al Pacino was one of the dozen or so celebrities who appeared in cameo roles throughout the movie.
In fact, Sandler said Pacino was the one who corralled the star-studded roster of actors and strongly encouraged them to take part in the film.
"That's all Pacino. Pacino would make those calls. 'I expect you to be there at 7 o' clock. But, but I have a--my daughter's recital. Yeah, that will be canceled. That kind of thing," Sandler said.
"Jack & Jill" was produced by Sandler's film company, Happy Madison.
The film was released in theaters across North America on Friday, November 11, 2011. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
