- Story Text: Crowds have turned out for one of Europe's oldest, and most prestigious, jazz festivals.
The five-day event in the Spanish coastal resort of San Sebastian is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. It now vies with the Montreaux festival in Switzerland as one of Europe's most popular jazz events.
From a humble one-day, one-act affair at its inception, the festival has grown to encompass more than 30 perfomances each day.
Jazz stars such as BB King, Gerri Allen and Jorge Pardo were among the performers at this year's event.
A feature of San Sebastian is free jazz performances for crowds in the street. Papa Joe's Rambling Band was among the first to entertain the crowds.
Formed in 1989, the band has toured regularly in Spain and France.
Heavy rain did dampen enthusiasm on the first day, but Jorge Pardo and Chano Dominguez played on at the open-air stage despite the downpour.
Spanish-born Dominguez has previously been nominated as the nation's best jazz soloist. Pardo has played a leading role in experimental jazz-flamenco fusion. In 1989 he joined Brazilians Nana Caymi and Wagner Tiso in the Montreaux Festival.
Organisers estimate more than 5000 visitors attended the various performances each day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
